Newsletter Jan. 25 Engl.

Dear readers

The past year ended with alarming news, but we look ahead with determination and confidence.

In our December newsletter, we reported on the disastrous cuts in the cultural and higher education sectors. At the end of December, the Senate confirmed that we have to save eight percent of our budget in 2025 whilst also covering additional construction costs –  while prices continue to rise. Drastic cuts are also planned for the following years. If the forthcoming discussions with the Senate do not lead to a change of heart, we will be facing the greatest uncertainties and challenges we have seen in twenty years.

A large portion of our budget goes already towards salaries. Cuts amounting to over one million euros in 2025 cannot be absorbed without far-reaching consequences. These cuts threaten innovation and excellence in teaching and research. Moreover, they strike at our future viability, our identity, and the values we stand for.

However, this existential threat also unites us, mobilising strength and fighting spirit. On 19 December, together with members of all Berlin universities and research institutions, we protested loudly against these cuts in front of the city parliament.

We will continue and will not allow ourselves to be discouraged as evidenced by the committed projects, collaborations and exhibitions that we present to you in this newsletter. We thank you for your support over the past months and will be delighted if you continue to attend our events – especially during these challenging times that demand so much of us. Stand together: for the preservation of the cultural landscape, for good study conditions, for Berlin’s future viability.

“See for yourself!”

Prof. Carolin Losch, visiting professor in stage and costume design, will discuss contemporary theatre trends and a renewed focus on themes from Greek antiquity during her inaugural public lecture. Can the Oedipus myth, for instance, serve to explain modern society’s blindness to darkening future scenarios? What is the status quo of tragedy today? Prof. Carolin Losch was previously a dramatic adviser at renowned theatres, including the Schauspielhaus Bochum, the National Theatre Mannheim, and the State Theatre Stuttgart. The lecture “See for yourself!” will take place at 5.00 pm on 15 January 2025 in the auditorium of the weissensee school of art and design berlin.

Musical theatre workshop “Falstaff”

In the second musical theatre workshop of the winter semester, stage and costume design students from weissensee school of art and design berlin, together with stage direction and voice students from the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin are creating interpretations of Verdi’s operatic comedy Falstaff. The libretto of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera is based on William Shakespeare’s comedy "The Merry Wives of Windsor". Deception and disguise are central elements of the plot, as the women make a fool of the perpetually lustful and financially troubled title character. The premiere will take place at 7.00 pm on 18 January 2025, with another performance at 5.00 pm on 19 January 2025, both in the Studio Hall of the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, Charlottenstraße 55.

Heimtextil Fair

The Heimtextil University Contest offers national and international students and universities in the field of textile design the opportunity to present their end-of-course assignments or design projects to an international professional audience and the press. Birke-Katharina Weber from the weissensee school of art and design berlin is one of the three winners of the contest and will represent the Department of Textile and Material Design at the Heimtextil Fair in Frankfurt am Main from 14 to 17 February 2025. In her assignment, MycoColors, she focuses on the development of sustainable dyes made from fungi and explores innovative possibilities for ecological dyeing techniques.

“On the necessity of a postmodern logic of the mirror”

The mirror used to be seen as an instrument of reflection: it should reflect the self as authentically as possible. But does this logic still do justice to the mirror today, in an age of AI (Mirror App), metaverse avatars and virtual mirrors? Dr. Swantje Martach, who holds a doctorate in philosophy on "A Neomaterialist Ontology of Dress", conducted research on unseen beauties as a post-doc at the University of Preschau. Since March 2024, she has been teaching at the Academy of Fashion & Design in Wiesbaden and co-edits the magazine IMAGE. On January 23, 2025 at 5 pm in the lecture hall of the weissensee school of art and design berlin, she will talk about the mirror image in postmodernism. The lecture is open to all interested parties.

“-spaces”

There are many spaces. They intersect, resonate with each other, and are accessible in various ways. The exhibition “-spaces” explores the active creation and design of spaces in relation to entering, surrounding, participating in, and observing given spaces. The project continues the collaboration between the Nasan Tur class from the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig and the master’s programme in Spatial Strategies at the weissensee school of art and design berlin. The exhibition will open at 6.00 pm on 30 January 2025 in the OpenStudios of the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig with performances by Emma Lang, Alexey Kokhanov, and Jeremy Knowles. The works will be on display until 2 February 2025.

"ausgezeichnet” (outstanding/sketched)

The exhibition “ausgezeichnet” focuses on sketchbooks, their definition and presentation. As silent companions, sketchbooks often reveal the intimate, searching, and playful creative processes of artists. With experimental approaches, students of painting not only question and expand the format but also the conceptual foundations of the sketchbook, emphasising its significance for artistic practice. The opening is at 6.00 pm on 31 January 2025 in the Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz. The exhibition will be open on the weekend of 1-2 February from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm on both days.
