Engl. Newsletter Juli 25 - weißensee kunsthochschule berlin

Dear readers,

Preparations for our Open Day Tours (Rundgang) are in full swing. On th 26 and 27 July 2025, we will once again be opening our laboratories, studios, and workshops and inviting you on an inspiring journey through the present and future of art and design in practice. You can look forward to a varied and vibrant celebration with music, performances, films, lectures, guided tours and exhibitions in more than 40 rooms.

A series of end-of-course presentations will begin eight days before the Open Days. The graduates in fine arts will kick off the series off on Friday, 18 July 2025 with the opening of their exhibition “Good Society” [Gute Gesellschaft]. Together with this year’s final-year students from the Ostkreuz School of Photography, they will display over 60 end-of-course projects - including paintings, drawings, photographs, video works, sculptures, textile art and installations - at the Wilhelm Studios in Reinickendorf.

On Monday, 21 July 2025, students from the Department of Fashion Design will present their collections at “seefashion25” on a runway in front of the Museum of Decorative Arts [Kunstgewerbemuseum]. And on 25 July 2025 – the eve of the first Open Day – graduates from the Department of Visual Communication will display their end-of-course projects in an exhibition entitled “Open End” in the feldfünf project rooms of the Metropolenhaus.

You can read more about what to expect during the summer and on our Open Days in the newsletter below. We look forward to many stimulating encounters – at the university, the Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz, the Kunstgewerbemuseum, the Kandinsky-Haus, in the project rooms feldfünf and in all the other places where the weissensee school of art and design berlin will be present in July. In a time of existential challenges due to drastic budget cuts, your interest and support give us enormous strength.

Graduate presentations

Fine Arts Graduation Exhibition “Good Society” [Gute Gesellschaft]

From 18 to 27 July, graduates in sculpture and painting will transform the Wilhelm Hallen into a centre of young art. What does it mean to be part of a “good society” today? Amid social, political, and ecological challenges, the young artists examine their relationship to community, identity, and responsibility from sculptural, audiovisual, and painterly perspectives. Ranging from intuitive gestures to formal precision and conceptual approaches, their works unfold as image spaces, objects, and installations. Whether personal, associative, or analytical, these artistic positions form a rich panorama of contemporary art. The exhibition is accompanied by an ambitious programme of panel discussions, guided tours, readings, and workshops.

Graduate Fashion Show „seefashion25“

On Monday, 21 July at 7 p.m., the Department of Fashion Design will present 28 graduate collections from bachelor’s and master’s students on a runway in front of the Museum of Decorative Arts. United by the theme of a “shared journey,” the graduates express their individual perspectives on the design and societal relevance of fashion. In times of increasing cuts to arts and culture, these young designers also view their work as a protest against political disregard for creative education and production processes. With “seefashion25”, they invite the public to join them on an artistic, political and emotional journey.

Visual Communication Graduation Exhibition “Open End”

The Department of Visual Communication navigates the intersection of design and social questions with content-driven research and formal experimentation. In a city where education and culture face growing financial pressure, the exhibition powerfully conveys the importance of keeping the future open rather than restricted. The works reflect the diversity and openness of visual communication through a wide range of media - from print to digital work to spatial installations. The vernissage of this end-of-course exhibition will take place on 25 July at 6 p.m. Opening hours in the project rooms feldfünf in the Metropolenhaus (near the Jewish Museum) are from 2 to 8 p.m. on 26 July and from 12 to 8 p.m. on 27 July.

„Swamp Things!“

Peatlands are often drained as useless land, yet intact they can store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined. The exhibition “Swamp Things!”, curated by Charlett Wenig and Lucy Norris from the weissensee school of art and design berlin, challenges us not only to preserve these ecosystems but to actively restore them and work with them. “Swamp Things!” was created in collaboration with the Cluster of Excellence “Matters of Activity” and will be on view from 8 to 20 July 2025 at the laboratory and research centre BHROX bauhaus reuse at Ernst-Reuter-Platz.

Under the guidance of Prof. Nader Ahriman and Sarah Lehnerer, students of painting will exhibit their work from 10 to 12 July 2025 in the project space of the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Kreuzberg. Their exhibition engages artistically with the precarious state of art, culture, and science in view of austerity, right-wing tendencies, and rearmament. In individually designed rooms, the works explore the political, social, and psychological dimensions of the current situation.
