The weissensee school of art and design berlin at the festival "CURRENTS. Design in Berlin"

Berlin has been a UNESCO City of Design since 2006 and has since developed into one of the world’s most dynamic design hubs. Creativity and design are important drivers of sustainable urban development. The new festival “CURRENTS. Design in Berlin” will be putting Berlin’s vibrant design and interior scene in the spotlight from 10 to 12 September 2026. Designers, studios, brands and institutions will present new projects, exhibitions and products in numerous locations.

The weissensee school of art and design berlin is represented at the festival with five exhibitions. These contributions from teaching, research and artistic practice show how design reacts to ecological, societal and technological challenges and how it can also become a catalyst for change.

For years, the laboratories at the weissensee school of art and design berlin have been producing work that extends beyond the institution itself: as a source of inspiration, a technological foundation, and a starting point for products and research projects. With the label “seetech,” the university is making these origins visible for the first time. The exhibition in the Kunsthalle at Hamburger Platz brings together exemplary works from three key laboratories: the Rapid Prototyping Lab, the Soft Rapid Prototyping Lab, and the eLAB, as well as from former students of the university. The exhibition was initiated by Nils Krüger, Christiane Sauer, Jörg Hugo, Simon von Schmude and Carola Zwick and curated by Nick Geipel and Julia Huhnholz.

SOFT COMMONS – Material, Relationships and Community Processes

„SOFT COMMONS“ brings together artistic positions that understand textiles as social infrastructures. Installations, material experiments, archives, interventions, and performances explore how materials can foster relationships, enable forms of community, and activate public space. Situated at the intersection of material experimentation, artistic research, and social practice, „SOFT COMMONS“ opens up new perspectives on contemporary textile design and makes textiles tangible as active agents of societal transformation. The exhibition came about in collaboration with the Research Campus Dahlem, where it is also being presented. It  was curated by Essi Glomb and Katrin Steiger.

MATTER OF PLACE – From Material Cycles to Places

As part of the "MATERIAL CULTURE" series of Berlin TXL, a range of exhibitions on the site of the Tegel Urban Tech Republic, “MATTER OF PLACE – From Material Cycles to Places” presents projects by “greenlab – laboratory for sustainable design practice”. The works on display show how design actively shapes ecological relationships and makes them visible. At the heart of all the works on display is the question of how regional resources can become points of departure for circular design. The exhibition understands place-making as a process of jointly creating, cultivating and renewing places – through materials, cooperative ventures and new forms of living together.

Re:lokal – Handcrafted Glass meets Porcelain Manufacture

Students from the HBK Saar  and the weissensee school of art and design berlin came together in the summer of 2026 at the International Glass Art Centre in Meisenthal (CIAV) in France for a joint workshop. Working with local glassmakers, they experimentally explored the potential of traditional artisanal glassmaking and its integration into the local culture of the Pays de Bitche region. The resulting glass objects are on display in the historic ring kiln hall of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin. The project is a collaboration between the weissensee school of art and design berlin (Product Design Department) and the HBK Saar together with the CIAV in Meisenthal and the KPM Berlin Foundation.

MISSING PART – The Whole and its Parts

In the exhibition “MISSING PART”, students from the Product Design Department of the weissensee school of art and design berlin present new designs for Nils Holger Moormann in the furniture store Modus Möbel in Charlottenburg. Contributing a product to the collection of a major design manufacturer remains the ideal for many young designers. Which missing part has what it takes to advance the collection, the brand, and its designers, to push boundaries, and – ideally – to spark a discourse throughout the entire industry?

With the students: Ida Höhn, Marie Marg, Alexis Klunder Schmid, Silas Petrac, Yael Bassan, Lorenzo Cogotti and Dima Nehmeh and the lecturers: Fabien Dumas and Prof. Jakob Timpe.
