Welcome to Weißensee!

Today, 189 students from 50 countries began their studies in art and design at the weissensee school of art and design berlin. President Angelika Richter welcomed them at the formal matriculation ceremony: “Become involved in shaping the weissensee school of art and design berlin! Help to ensure that, as an institution, it remains open and ready to ask challenging questions! And, above all, make it your place! In the end, you are the heart of this university.” We wish all our students a successful start to the winter semester, inspiring encounters and an exciting time together at our university!

Welcome, Tutia Schaad

Debates around material justice, in which the struggle over the social and economic significance of craftmanship, materials, and artistic and design practices find expression, emerged in the early years of industrialisation in Western Europe and helped shape the concept of design through the German Work Federation [Deutscher Werkbund]. Against the backdrop of both contemporary and historical developments, Mareen Baumeister, Sofia Fernández and Konrad Jünger will discuss the potential of digital craftsmanship in addressing the issue of material justice from the perspectives of sustainability and social change.

For their project, the team has been announced as national winner of the James Dyson Award 2026. Congratulations!

DAAD Prize

Yan Chmarau, born in 1994 in Mahiljou, Belarus, completed his Diploma in Sculpture in 2026 and is currently continuing his studies as a master student. In his artistic practice, Chmarau works with video, photography, sculpture, installation, and internet-based platforms. For his diploma project, Changing into Winter Tyres, he spent several years collecting videos from abandoned VKontakte (a Russian social media platform) and YouTube profiles dating from the early days of the internet. From this material, he developed a film about youth, risky behaviour, and the idea of an “unrealized future”. Our warm congratulations to Yan on receiving this DAAD Prize.
